September Bitcoin Movie Night: Default

One week until a nation defaults.
Some saw it coming. Others still believed everything would be fine.

How differently does that same week unfold for someone who sees the crisis coming and someone who has no idea?

Set during South Korea’s 1997 financial crisis, Default follows three people facing very different choices.

Han Si-hyun (Kim Hye-soo), head of the monetary policy team at the Bank of Korea, recognizes the approaching crisis and urges action. Financier Yoon Jung-hak (Yoo Ah-in) sees the same warning signs as an investment opportunity. Meanwhile, Gap-su (Heo Joon-ho), a small factory owner unaware of the looming crisis, secures a major deal and looks forward to a better future for his family.

One tries to prevent the crisis. Another bets on it. The third simply wants to keep the life he has built. Through their choices, a national financial crisis becomes something deeply personal: a business agreement, a livelihood, a family’s future.

If we had been in their position, who would we have trusted and what would we have chosen?

Watching this film with Bitcoin in mind raises another set of questions. When we trust money, who are we really trusting? How well do we understand the financial system we use every day? And when that system falters, what choices remain for individuals?

For September’s Saturday Block Movie Night, we’ll watch Default together and bring the questions it leaves us with into a conversation about Bitcoin today.
